Wednesday, November 08, 2000 – This week is being observed here as Veterans Week, leading up to Remembrance Day on Sunday November 11, 2000.

As is customary, a call has been sounded for Saint Lucians to give generously to those who fought in the two world wars. This was the plea made by the Patron of the Saint Lucia Ex Service League and Governor General Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy. The Governor General reminded the general public that the veterans of the two world wars have made their contribution to the construction of the fortress of peace. "They deserve our commendation, our gratitude and our support. This year, give generously, not grudgingly. You have done well in the past, but as in all fields of endeavour, there is always room for improvement," Dame Pearlette said.

In thanking those who gave monetary donations, Her Excellency emphasized the substantial sum made last year. "I am pleased to let you know that we realized $22,974.14 from that effort. $11,739.00 came from the sale of poppies, $2, 400.00 from the sale of wreaths and $8,815.00 from donations. I want to thank, in a very special way, the staff and students of our educational institutions for their enthusiastic support of the Poppy Appeal Drive. Their contributions accounted for 67% of the amount raised from the sale of poppies," ended the Governor General.

Special mention has been made of the Cornith Secondary school, the Anglican Infant School and the St. Aloysius R.C. Boys Infant School.

On Sunday "Remembrance Day" there will be a church service at the Roman Catholic Church in Castries, followed by a parade on the Derek Walcott Square. The officials then move to the George V Park for the laying of wreaths and the day’s activities climaxes with a reunion at the CSA Centre in Sans Souci.
