UNESCO Holds ASPnet "Peace" Workshop |
Contact: National Commission for UNESCO Monday, January 10, 2000 - The St. Lucia National Commission for UNESCO will be holding a Training Workshop for principals and teacher coordinators of member schools of the UNESCO Associated Project Network in Education and International Cooperation for Peace (ASPnet) on Wednesday, 19 January 2000, at the Bay Gardens Convention Centre at Rodney Bay. Given that the Year 2000 has been proclaimed as the International Year for the Culture of Peace, the Workshop will focus on the theme of "peace". This workshop is intended to promote greater understanding and awareness of UNESCO, to increase knowledge and appreciation of the roles, functions and responsibilities of teacher coordinators, and to equip them with the necessary skills to function effectively as coordinators. The Associated Schools Project is an UNESCO Project which involves some 5,600 schools in 162 countries worldwide, It aims to promote international cooperation and understanding by encouraging member schools to undertake special educational programmes relating to international cooperation other countries and cultures, human rights and the environment. St. Lucia joined the ASPnet in 1982, and to date, some 3 5 schools, from kindergarten to postsecondary, are members of the ASP in St. Lucia. Mrs. Shery Alexander Heinis is the ASPnet National Coordinator. An Official Opening Ceremony, which will be addressed, by Hon. Mario Michel, Minister of Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports, Ms. Lawrence Laurent Parliamentary Commissioner, and Mrs. Sandra Gift, the UNESCO Regional Coordinator will precede the working sessions of the workshop for the ASPnet. |
