Wednesday,
September 20, 2000 - Patrons to the increasingly
popular Friday night Anse-La-Raye Fish Fest could find themselves inadvertently
engaging in an illegal activity if they are not careful according to personnel
from the Fisheries Department. Deputy Chief Fisheries Officer Vaughan Charles
says it has been drawn to the attention of his department that several vendors
are illegally selling under-sized lobsters to unsuspecting patrons.
According to Mr. Charles, "The Department of Fisheries
through our wardens and extension officers will be monitoring the situation very
closely.
We
do not want to create a problem of panic or an embarrassing situation in the
Anse-La-Raye community and hence the reason why we are asking those persons who
are presently engaged in that illegal activity to discontinue it. We don’t
want to make an arrest or lay charges against anybody during the festivities on
the Friday night. However, if this practice continues we will have to take the
necessary action to curb it. We want to appeal to the public that any lobster
that has not obtained the length of 9.5 centimeters is undersized and therefore
not appropriate for sale in either the cooked or raw form. These lobsters should
therefore not be in anyone’s possession."
He says the onus also lies with patrons to the Friday Night
Fish Festival not to purchase lobsters that have not attained the required
9.5-centimeter length. Persons caught violating the requirements could face
arrest and a maximum fine of five thousand dollars. If continued, Mr. Charles
says, the illegal activity could have serious negative repercussions on the
Anse-La-Raye Friday Night Fish Fest.
