Thumbs-up for Youth Policy Process |
Monday, June 05, 2000 - Permanent Secretary in the Department of Youth and Sports, Ernest Hilaire, who recently returned from a Commonwealth Ministers of Youth Conference, says St. Lucia was singled out among other Commonwealth member states for its comprehensive approach to the formulation of a National Youth Policy. Over the past year the Department of Youth and Sports has been collaborating with the National Youth Council and other stakeholders in the formulation of the first draft of a National Youth Policy. "They had heard of the process we had followed and I can say to you they found the whole concept of block raps one of the most innovative features as no other country in the entire commonwealth had tried that as a technique. And they were very, very praise worthy of the young people in St. Lucia for using that as one of the ways for collecting information. So you have a document that has matured - that is more substantive - and we hope in many ways that it really represents the views of as many young people as possible," said Hilaire. The Permanent Secretary’s remarks were made to young persons from around the island who had gathered in Vieux Fort on Sunday, June 04, to put together the final draft of a National Youth Policy Document for St. Lucia. The final draft of the National Youth Policy document is expected to be forwarded to the Cabinet of Ministers later this month and subsequently to Parliament for adoption, as the official youth policy document for St. Lucia. |
