Enforcement of the provisions of the Metrology Bill will now be the
responsibility of the St. Lucia Bureau of Standards. The bill, which was passed
in the House of Assembly on July 25 of this year, will replace the archaic
Weights and Measures Ordinance of 1911. The Metrology Bill will make for an effective system for regulating weights and measures, with the gradual implementation of the metric system of measurement as the legal measurement in St. Lucia. Units of measurement like pounds, gallons and yards will be replaced by kilograms, litres and metres. The Bill will also enable the protection of consumers against fraud and deception when measuring instruments such as scales and gas pumps are used in trade. The
enforcement of weights and measures activities was traditionally carried out by
the Royal St Lucia Police Force and later, by the Price Control Inspectorate of
the Consumer Affairs Department. |
