Friday, June 16, 2000 - www.climatechange.gov.lc That’s the address of the latest website launched by the Sustainable Development Unit within the Ministry of Planning, Development, Environment and Housing.

The website will serve as a medium for the exchange of information between St. Lucia and the international community on global climate change issues, and forms part of St. Lucia’s efforts at formulating a national report on climate change to be presented to the United Nations.

Assistant to the National Climate Change Project Devon Barrow says, "Persons wanting to find information on climate change, especially local information, can go to the site and they will be able to find information on the local project status as well as general information on climate change."

According to Mr. Barrow, "Since the site has just been launched, we are now going through it to find out whether there are any minor glitches and if any are found to remedy it. As soon as that is over we will be updating the site. There is a wealth of information coming in constantly on climate change. At the global level, climate change is becoming a very big thing and we’re trying to update our site as often as possible."

Particular attention will be placed on the school system to make students aware of the existence of the website and its purpose. "That is one of the perennial problems facing websites today. Too many times people are simply unaware that a particular website exists where they can find specific information. For our site, we’ll be trying our best to inform the public of the site’s existence and will be targeting the schools because often times students require information on climate change issues. We would like them to know that there’s a specific place they can find that kind of information twenty-four hours a day," said Barrow.

At the moment, the Climate Change Website is being hosted by Cable and Wireless.
