Sir Arthur Students Urged to Strive for Knowledge and Excellence |
Friday, January 28, 2000 - Students of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College have been urged to emulate Sir William Arthur Lewis, the academic and Nobel Laureate, after whom the school was named. During the annual wreath laying ceremony held in observance of Nobel Laureate Week, Principal of the School, Dr. George Forde indicated that remembering Sir Arthur is a demonstration of a commitment to knowledge and excellence. "We are saying to the staff of this college that your work must in some way reflect excellence, commitment and involvement that was characteristic of this man. We are saying to students that, despite whatever beginnings and the obstacles that you might have to overcome, you must use the work of Sir Arthur to see the possibilities that are there for you. We are saying to the society that spawns such a man that there is no excuse for complacent or for mediocrity and we must continue to commemorate this event with a passion," said Forde. During Friday’s ceremony, the wife of Sir Arthur Lewis, Lady Gladys Lewis, as well as representatives of the SALCC Board of governors, staff, students and the Saint Lucian Community, laid wreaths. |
