SEDU to Bring Business Management Courses to Soufriere |
Contact: Dana Augustin Tuesday, August 29, 2000 – The Small Enterprise Development Unit, (SEDU) in conjunction with the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College is extending its small business management courses to Soufriere. A thirteen-week course scheduled to commence on September 4, is expected to accommodate twenty-five people at a subsidized, individual rate of one hundred and twenty five dollars. For the past two years, SEDU has been providing such courses to persons in Castries and Vieux – Fort with the intention of developing entrepreneurship especially in rural communities on the island. SEDU recognized that the problem of small business in Saint Lucia is not just an issue of finance but also that of management. As a result the courses will emphasize on business planning and financial management. Representatives from various service agencies including the Customs and Excise and Inland Revenue Departments as well as Insurance companies are expected to lecture participants on fundamental issues such as taxes and duties and the role that insurance plays in business development. For the first time SEDU is offering the course with criteria. Applicants must have completed secondary education at least at the Form Four Level or must otherwise have owned a business or held a managerial position for at least two years. Upon successful completion of the course participants will receive a certificate, endorsed by the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College. SEDU has so far disbursed about two million dollars to the development of rural enterprises, in particular through its Rural Economic Diversification Incentives Project, known as REDIP. |
