Saint Lucia to become H.Q. for Caribbean Postal Union |
Friday, June 16, 2000 - Saint Lucia will become the headquarters for the Caribbean Postal Union, following an agreement signed between the island’s Minister for Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities, Senator the Honourable Calixte George and Secretary General of the Caribbean Postal Union, Edward Noble, at the Greaham Louisy Administrative Building on Friday. The union consists of postal administrations from various countries in the region and proposes to strengthen and improve postal services throughout the Caribbean. During a meeting of the union held in Saint Lucia in 1997, the island volunteered to house the headquarters of the Caribbean Postal Union. Now that this has become a reality, financial and housing arrangements are being made to facilitate the functioning of the headquarters in the island. Apart from Saint Lucia, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Suriname participated in the signing agreement for the Caribbean Postal Union’s headquarters to be housed in Saint Lucia. |
