Monday
May 02, 2000 – Saint Lucia was among more than twenty countries that met
in Senegal, Africa last week to partake in a three-day world education forum
plotting the way forward for education on a global scale.
Discussions at the meeting focused on the achievements in education as a whole,
and what needs to be done to improve the quality of education, with proposals
and objectives to provide education for all by the year 2015.
The meeting also gave countries, especially those in the Caribbean, the
opportunity to engage in dialogue with various funding agencies like the World
Bank, so that grants could be distributed and secured for the growth and
development of education systems.
Upon
his return to the island, Minister for Education, Human Resource Development,
Youth and Sports, the Honourable Mario Michel said, “I believe that out of the
meeting it is very likely that the Caribbean will be given major assistance -
both grant assistance and loan assistance - from major agencies for the
development of education. We
believe, in particular, that Saint Lucia will be put on a fast track of
countries that will be given major assistance for education.”
Major financial assistance could help developing
countries like Saint Lucia to become better equipped to compete in every aspect
on a global scale, particularly as the island seeks to incorporate information
technology into its education system on a larger scale to deal with the
challenges of the growing information era. Developmental strategies, such as
this education forum could also possibly reduce the “Third World”
reputation, which is associated with smaller, and less industrialized countries
when compared to metropolitan nations like the United Sates.
