Regional Education Ministers Meet in Santo Domingo |
Wednesday, February 09, 2000 - A four-member delegation headed by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports, Honourable Mario Michel is in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, attending two major regional education meetings. The first meeting is for Caribbean Ministers of Education on Wednesday, February 09, 2000. The second is the Latin America and the Caribbean Ministers of Education Conference scheduled for February 10 - 12, 2000. At those meetings, the Caribbean and subsequently Latin America and the Caribbean are expected to finalize a regional position on Education for All in preparation for the Global Assembly in Senegal in April 2000. Minister Michel has indicated that in addition to agenda matters, St. Lucia would profit the opportunity to present its Education Development Plan to attending regional and international funding agencies. The Development Plan, which initially covers a five-year period, has been sub-divided into 14 sectors, each having its own capital and recurrent cost. Mr. Michel says the presentation of the Education Development Plan is part of his Ministry's and the Government's plan to approach funding agencies, not with cup in hand, but with plan in hand. Other members of the delegation are Education Officer/Planning Mr. Marcus Edward, Statistician Mrs. Esther Chitolie-Joseph and Permanent Secretary Dr. Didacus Jules. |
