Prime Minister Pleased with IMF Review |
Contact: Prime Minister's Press Secretary November 22, 2000 Prime Minister Dr Kenny D. Anthony says he is pleased with the outcome of recent consultations with top officials of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF dispatches technical teams to each of its member-states around the world every two years to review and assess monetary, financial and economic trends. Presently, such teams are also in several other Commonwealth Caribbean countries. The Prime Minister expressed his satisfaction with the talks with the top executives of the Washington-based institution following their latest routine visit to St. Lucia to discuss and review fiscal trends and other financial policy issues. Dr Anthony, who is also Minister of Finance, said: "I am satisfied with the outcome of the discussions." He said the IMF team will now present its report to the Bretton Woods institution’s Board of Directors. The Finance Minister said the Government of St. Lucia "has authorized the IMF to publish the report so it would be available on the Internet." This approach, he added, "is consistent with its policy of making available to the public important documents of national interest." The Prime Minister said he couldn’t disclose what the report would say, as it has to be presented to the IMF directors before it can be released to the public. "In that light," he said, "the report should make interesting reading for those who suggest the economy is in crisis." |
