– Teachers around the
island have been commended for the heightened awareness among young people
towards preserving the environment. During
activities marking April 22, 2000 as Earth Day, scores of young people turned
out to participate in Soliel Leve at the Pigeon Island National Landmark. Organiser
of the event, the Saint Lucia National Trust, says the message of preserving
the environment is finally making an impact.
“We are quite pleased at the Saint Lucia National Trust that the
teachers are taking the message to the kids, and you can’t have it starting at
a much earlier age than that. I
am very pleased today, to see the largest number of kids we have had at an Earth
Day ceremony ever. It means
that they themselves will now take the message to the schools and you know the
importance of peer education,” said Chairman of the Trust, Cletus Springer as
he urged the teachers to continue the good work..
A
new campaign, dubbed Envirofever, which is expected to help boost appreciation
for the environment and that will involve the schools, was launched on Earth
Day. A
long serving member of the Trust, Pat Charles, lamented the lack of appreciation
for the environment by the older generation and warned that a lot of the
practices of the older folk will eventually damage the environment. The
theme for Earth Day was “Water and the Quality of Life.” |
