PM Begins Visits to Industrial Estates |
Wednesday, January 19, 2000 – Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Kenny Anthony, Tuesday, began a series of visits to Industrial Estates on the island. The first visit brought into sharp focus the need for proper maintenance of the properties and the instituting of mechanisms by government for further assistance, particularly in developing the export potential of the businesses. According To Dr. Anthony, he was impressed with some of the operations taking place at the Bisee Industrial Estate. "I visited PLU in Union and as you know they are engaged in data entry services and it was a tremendous experience, because here was a factory all air conditioned and the employees were all young Saint Lucians. They were looking at a certain municipal area in the United States and their purpose was to determine whether that area was a flood prone area or not. They were managing a computer, rearranging data so that decision makers would know what to do with those specific areas," Dr. Anthony said. The National Development Corporation has the sole responsibility for maintaining the Industrial Estates and Dr. Anthony called on officials to go further and help market the operations of the small entrepreneurs. Businesspersons, Dr. Anthony said can no longer provide for just Saint Lucians, "The new wave of entrepreneurs in Saint Lucia has to go out. They have to reach other Caricom markets. We can do it. We have the ingenuity. We have the will, but we have to be brave and make the kind of investments that are needed to facilitate this," the Prime Minister ended. Next week Dr. Anthony continues his visits when he expects to hold dialogue with investors at the Dennery and Vieux Fort Industrial Estates on January 24 and 25 respectively. |
