Permanent Secretaries Dialogue with Public Service Minister |
Wednesday, May 10, 2000 – The first in a series of dialogue sessions between the Minister of the Public Service and Permanent Secretaries within the public sector was held on Wednesday. According to the Minister of the Public Service, Senator the Honourable Petrus Compton, this exercise is a fundamental component of the Public Sector Reform process. However, he said, this first meeting was more narrow in its objective. "We really brought the Permanent Secretaries together so that they can reflect on their own relationship with the Ministry of the Public Service. I wanted to hear from the Permanent Secretaries, how do they relate to the Ministry? What is the nature of that relationship? Is it good? Where are the deficiencies? Where are the weak points? What are the difficulties they are having in getting service out of the Ministry and what also are the good things that the Ministry of the Public Service does in terms of facilitating their own ministries?" Compton said. Mr. Compton described Wednesday’s meeting as fruitful, saying he is now more informed and will begin to re-engineer the Ministry of the Public Service to respond to the changing public sector environment. |
