Parrot Census Shows Rise in Population |
Contact: Tesa St. Ange Wednesday, August 30, 2000 - The Forestry Department is reporting a successful census of the St. Lucian Parrot, the Amazona Versicolor. The census, which took place on August 22 and 23, was aimed at identifying trends in the parrot population. Thirty-two watch points were established in Forestierre, Millet, the Barre d’isle, Coin de Lance and Egmon Forest. The results of the last Parrot census in 1996 gave an estimated population of five hundred. Since then parrots have expanded into new areas, and according to this year’s census there are presently eight hundred birds. Forestry officials are attributing this rise to a number of efforts in preserving the endemic species over the years. These include a mass education campaign via schools and the media, the passage environmental laws such as the Wildlife Protection Act, expansion of forest reserves through government purchase of forestlands, and close-off seasons to regulate sporadic hunting. |
