P.M. says Constituency Visits Producing Results |
Contact: Julita Peter Tuesday, September 05, 2000 – Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Kenny Anthony says his series of constituency visits is not a charade. He said as a result of his direct interaction with residents, already major improvements can be seen in every constituency that has been visited. The Prime Minister was speaking at the end his latest constituency tour on Monday. During the two-day tour of the Micoud South constituency, Dr. Anthony and his delegation held community meeting with residents to hear their concerns first hand. These concerns centred primarily on insufficient street lighting, poor quality of drinking water and the road network, and the decline of the banana industry and the attendant implications for the farming community. The Prime Minister told residents of government’s plans for dealing with their concerns and reassured farmers that there is still hope for the banana industry. "If there were no hope for banana farmers I do not think we (the Government of Saint Lucia) would have been pumping money into the industry as we have been. The amazing thing is that Windward Island bananas are in very heavy demand. Supermarkets are calling for our bananas but we are not able to respond by way of increased production", said Dr. Anthony. He expressed optimism that come January 2001, there would a turn- around in the industry. However, the Prime Minister noted, although bananas will remain a part of the local economy, it will no longer play the dominant role. Dr. Anthony suggested that there has been a quiet shift in the local economy from bananas to tourism. The two-day tour of the Micoud South Constituency included Parliamentary Representative for Micoud South, Honourable Cassius Elias, other members of the Cabinet of Ministers, government officials, and representatives of the various utility companies. The Constituency visits provide the opportunity for the Prime Minister to have face-to-face interaction with residents and to assess the performance of the Parliamentary Representatives. To date, Dr. Anthony has undertaken seven constituency visits. |
