Over 600 Jobs As Government Initiative Bears Fruit |
Contact: Roger Joseph Monday, November 13, 2000 – More than 600 jobs will be created when a local investor establishes St. Lucia’s first call centre operation. Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Kenny D. Anthony announced recently that the Government of Saint Lucia had granted a license for the establishment of the centre here. In making the announcement the Prime Minister said that the initiative comes out of a carefully crafted strategy to refashion the island’s economy from its heavy reliance on banana export earnings towards tourism and services. He said the establishment of call centres was one such service through which the island can launch an assault on unemployment. Dr. Anthony pointed out that the government’s insistence on the revision of the Cable & Wireless monopoly through the passage of new telecommunications legislation was the platform from which this service could take off. Part of the plan involved a redefining of the National Development Corporation to enable it to lead the charge in the development of this sphere of economic activity. The new call centre operation is a subsidiary of Helen Television System and is expected to be set up shortly. A second investor has indicated interest in establishing a similar operation, which is expected to employ another 600 to 700 hundred persons. These announcements have come on the heels of a recent announcement by the Minister for Commerce, International Financial Services and Consumer Affairs, Honourable Philip J. Pierre, of the creation of 200 jobs through the establishment of a gypsum plant in Delcer, quarter of Choiseul, soon. |
