No Plans to Close St. Jude's Hospital |
Contact: Prime Minister's Press Secretary Thursday, May 18, 2000 – The Government of St. Lucia wishes to dispel the rumor that St. Jude's Hospital is to be closed down. The Ministry of Health also wishes to place on public record that nothing is further from the truth. St. Jude has historically been and continues to be the flagship health institution in the south of the island and it will continue to play a leading role in the delivery of health service to that of the island. Those peddling the unfounded and baseless rumor about the hospital's closure are pointing to the recent announcement of the government's intention to construct a brand new, $40 million General Hospital. It is natural that with this new modern and well-equipped institution, the role of the former general hospital and of the other hospitals around the island will have to be reviewed. However, in the case of St. Jude's Hospital, it is not envisaged that such a review would be at the expense of its major role as the leading health institution in the south. The Government of St. Lucia remains firmly committed to the constant upgrading and improvement of the nations health services at the national and community levels and urges those responsible for spreading this incredible concoction to desist from creating unnecessary anxiety and confusion. |
