New Public Facility for Dennery |
Contact: Julita Peter Thursday, November 09, 2000 – Residents of La Pointe in Dennery now have a new public facility for their use. The Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) officially handed over the seven hundred square foot public facility to the residents on Wednesday. The new facility is equipped with baths, toilets and laundry services and was co-financed by the Caribbean Development Bank and the Government of St. Lucia through the Basic Needs Trust Fund. The project costs one hundred and sixty-eight thousand dollars ($168, 000.00) and forms part of BNTF’s programme to assist in the elimination of sub-human conditions. At the official handing-over ceremony Parliamentary Representative for Dennery South, Honouable Damian Greaves, said the construction of such a facility was necessary, as many persons in the community could not afford their own. "There are many people who are asking whether this facility is necessary. I believe that it is. We know that La- Pointe is a very rocky place and it is not easy for people to put in their own toilets on that type of soil," he added. The Chairman of the Dennery Village Council has challenged residents to show their appreciation for the efforts of the basic Needs Trust Fund by ensuring that the facility is properly maintained at all times. He said the Council is willing to collaborate with residents in putting a system in place to ensure that the facility is well managed and becomes a model for other such facilities. |
