Thursday, October 26, 2000 – The Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports and the Colonial Life Insurance Company (CLICO) are initiating the establishment of a new education awards scheme in Saint Lucia together. To coordinate that process a committee has been set up comprising representatives of these two entities as well as the Saint Lucia Teachers’ Union and the National Principal’s Association.

According to Permanent Secretary Education and Human Resource Development, Dr. Didacus Jules, the purpose of the awards is to set the framework for a package that will promote excellence in education at all levels and that includes not only the teachers and students but also the ancillary staff at the schools.

The establishment of the awards will take place in phases. To start off, there will be what is called a ‘CLICO Saint Lucia Teachers’ Awards,’ which will run during the month of October coinciding with the observance of Teachers’ Appreciation and Education month.

CLICO has agreed to underwrite the cost of the recognition of teachers in the system. The Ministry of Education is hoping to launch the CLICO St. Lucia Teachers’ Awards in November and details will also be provided about the overall awards package during that month.
