Wednesday, August 30, 2000 - Significant developments are earmarked for St. Lucia’s broadcast sector. As part of efforts to reform and strengthen the sector, government is currently pursuing a new broadcast act and strategies to increase censorship of broadcast material.

Speaking at Friday’s opening of St. Lucia’s newest radio station Hot FM (105.3 & 96.1 FM), Communications Minister, Senator Calixte George, noted that it is imperative to have a Broadcast Act unique to the St. Lucian environment. "This act, although it is still in its embryonic stages, will seek to address all the areas directly related to broadcasting. This new Broadcasting Act will not only have implications for the commercial sector but this Act will also introduce community radio licenses, and through community radio licenses, an avenue would be created for individuals in their own communities to focus on the particular needs of the communities that they would wish to serve," said George.

Censorship of broadcast material will also be stepped up with the establishment soon of a Broadcast Authority. Minister George maintained that the dissemination of information and the provision of entertainment must never violate moral principles. He urged the broadcast media to be responsible in the programming they offer and the image they portray as they seek to provide a quality service.
