Wednesday, January 19, 2000 – The Ministry of Health, Human Services and Gender Relations has embarked on a project aimed at assisting the elderly, disabled persons among the population.

The "Care of the Elderly" Project, which began last year, undertakes repairs, renovations and sometimes construction of homes for those persons. Already persons in Dennery, Vieux Fort and Monchy have benefited from the programme.

Last week the community of Delcer came alive as many turned out for the "Koudmen" to reconstruct a home for an elderly gentleman.

According to Project Coordinator, Eyonthe Husbands, "So far, we’ve completed three in Dennery, we’re starting in Gros Islet and next week we move to Marigot. By early February, we’re going to do Vieux Fort North and South."

Parliamentary Representative for Choiseul the Honourable Ferguson John said this kind of project gives him a great sense of achievement. "That’s the kind of work that gives me a lot of enjoyment, a lot of satisfaction. Otherwise, politics is a very, very thankless task. When you see old persons like that being given actual assistance there is nothing short of comfort of joy and you get the feeling after all that its worth it," Mr. John said.

When the project is completed in February 2000, some one hundred elderly persons would have benefited.
