Contact: Dana Augustin Tuesday, May 09, 2000 – Mr. Antoine Serieux, commonly known as "Mr. Wellcome" turned one hundred years old last Saturday. On Monday May 08, 2000 representatives of the Ministry of Health, Human Services, Family Affairs and Gender Relations visited his Ti Rocher residence, in Micoud to congratulate him on his 100th birthday. At the brief gathering of family, friends and ministry officials, Mr. Serieux was presented with a lovely assortment of flowers and fruits by the Parliamentary Secretary in the ministry, Mr. Michael Gaspard. " The lesson in Mr. Serieux’s life is very important. Today we witness all kinds of problems in our society - our families are dysfunctional, and now more than ever we need people like Mr. Serieux to tell us about life," said Mr. Gaspard. Mr. "Wellcome" was born on May 6, 1900 and originates in La Pointe, Mon Repos where he grew up farming, and doing carpentry and sewing for a living. Having married Bertha Jn. Marie at age twenty, this widower has lived through four family generations and holds an astounding record of having one hundred and nineteen children, grand children and great grand children. He is also popularly known for his key involvement in the La Rose festivities, having reigned as La Rose King for many years. His family and friends are very appreciative of his life long contributions towards their development, and hope that he lives to see many more years. The Ministry of Health, Human Services, Family Affairs and Gender Relations continues to recognize older persons for their contributions to the welfare of the society. |
