Tuesday, April 25, 2000 – Local manufacturers will get their turn to review a study on the Enhancement of the Competitiveness of the Manufacturing Sector later this week when the Ministry of Commerce hosts a national consultation to discuss the issue.  The Thursday April 27, 2000 consultation will also see Minister for Commerce, International Financial Services and Consumer Affairs, Honourable Phillip J. Pierre making his first major address to such a wide body of manufacturers since taking up his new post earlier this year.

The study, commissioned by the Ministry of Commerce following two consultations held with manufacturers to determine the way forward for the sector, was undertaken by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNTAD) earlier this year.    Sixty private and public sector interests were interviewed over a three-week period by the consultant, Mr. Francesco Abbattee, in compiling his report.  The competitiveness strategy examines industrial and trade policy, fiscal incentives, technical assistance to firms, foreign direct investment, finance, human resource development, institutional and physical infrastructure and the decision making process.

Director of Commerce, David Jordan says the document provides a road map to facilitate not only the dialogue to be undertaken but also the basis for the review of policy measures that may assist with the improvement of the competitiveness of the sector.   “The intention however, is for him (the consultant) to present this report on Thursday to the widest possible gathering of manufacturers as well as some of the NGO’s and public sector agencies who were in fact interviewed with the intention that the document could be critically re-examined before the final report is in fact adopted,” Jordan said.
