Lucians Reflect on Laureate Achievements |
Wednesday, January 26, 2000 - A call has been echoed for more St. Lucians particularly the nation’s youth to become better acquainted with the achievements of the island’s Nobel Laureates. According to Minister for Education, Human Resource Development Youth and Sports Honourable Mario Michel, St. Lucians should allow themselves to become more inspired by the examples of the Nobel Laureates in their own quest of excellence. "Sir Arthur and Derek Walcott have both taught us that excellence is attainable and that there are no odds that cannot be overcome in the pursuit of excellence. They have secured us Nobel prizes in economics and in literature. There can be no stronger base than this for a new tradition of excellence to emerge in our country. Economics and literature, the art of the daily bread and the magic of the imagination. Let us read more about the lives of these great St. Lucians. Let us study their work and in so doing let us be more inspired by their example. Both have showed us the way in which the cultivation of the mind is possible," said Michel. Mr. Michel spoke on Monday, January 24, 2000 at an open-air ceremony held at the Derek Walcott Square, as several groups and performers paid tribute to St. Lucia’s two Nobel laureates as part of activities in celebration of Nobel Laureate Week being observed here. |
