Law Reform - 2000 and Beyond |
Wednesday, February 02, 2000 – Saint Lucia will be one of the islands represented when several of the world’s largest and most influential professional oragnisations hold a very important international conference titled "Law Forum: 2000 and Beyond." The meeting being held in collaboration with the Bahamas Bar Association is convened for the British Colonial Hilton Resort, Nassau, Bahamas, February 17-19, 2000. Saint Lucia’s Attorney General Senator Petrus Compton, is attending and suggests that such a meeting will be an eye opener, as many of the issues down for discussion are of pertinent concern to the island’s judicial system. "The very first session on the first day, will be looking at the question of financial services in the new millennium. And this is of critical importance to us as we are just embarking on the financial services area as a new sector in the economy and we would certainly want to hear what the experts in the area feel is the way forward in that direction. That is a very, very important issue for us. I note that there is an issue of family law reform in the new millennium," Mr. Compton disclosed. The President of the International Court of Justice His Excellency Judge Steven M. Schwebel has agreed to speak, and other prominent speakers coming from the United Kingdom, Europe, Africa and Canada. The conference is a showcase millennium law conference. It is a joint effort of the Bahamas Financial Services Board, the International Union of Lawyers, International Bar Association, American Bar Organisation, the Organisation of Commonwealth Caribbean Bar Associations and the Bahamas Bar Association. |
