Wednesday, May 03, 2000 – For the first time ever, the Saint Lucia Jazz Festival will be staged in the Town of Soufriere.   During the launching of Jazz in the South, on Tuesday, Director of Tourism Hilary Modeste said the expansion of the Jazz Festival presents an additional opportunity to market the beauty of the island.   “From the Derek Walcott Square with the Lunch-time jazz, with what is happening in the South, in Balembouche, it’s a festival that is all around us and the Jazz Festival being what it is, a tool to market Saint Lucia, gives the visitor an opportunity to see Saint Lucia and enjoy the Jazz Festival,” Modeste said.

According to the Tourism Director, this year’s festival will be bigger and better.   Modeste “All the bookings are looking good. I am quite sure if you want to get to Saint Lucia right now you could not get a flight.   I am looking forward to enjoying the wonderful music and the lovely atmosphere that is the Saint Lucia we live and we love to make up what we now call the Saint Lucia Jazz Festival.”

The Parliamentary Representative for Soufriere called on residents to ensure that they embrace visitors to that part of the island during the Festival.   “Let me tell you that this weekend we will be having many, many persons from out of town.  We have to be very good hosts and persons will be recognising and noticing what we do.   Let us open our doors, our arms and make them feel welcome,” said Honourable Dr. Walter Francois.

Jazz in Soufriere takes off on Saturday, May 06  with RAM, Sisterhood and Allison Marquis performing at the Morne Coubaril Estate.  There will also be a free show on the Soufriere waterfront on Saunday, May 08, beginning at 7 p.m.

Jazz in the South also includes shows at Balenbouche, the Rudy John Park in Laborie and the Vieux Fort Square.
