Industrial Policy for St. Lucia by end of September |
The Ministry of Commerce International Financial Services and Consumer Affairs has completed two diagnostic studies on the manufacturing sector and concluded its research on the sector to formulate a comprehensive industrial policy and strategic development plan for the manufacturing sector in St Lucia for the next five years. Dr. Asif Chida, a consultant attached to the Commonwealth Secretariat concluded his research and consultation with the private and public sector institutions after a recent four-week assignment. The Industrial policy emanates from the findings of the recent research and the two studies conducted by UNCTAD and CFTC, which assisted with the reformulation of St Lucia's industrial policy. Social partners in the public and private sector and civil groups can expect the finalization of the Industrial Policy and Strategic Development Plan at the end of September this year, when officials of the Commonwealth Secretariat will again visit St Lucia to make the presentation of the document to the St Lucia government. Director of Commerce and Industry, David Jordan, indicates that the Industrial Policy will be utilized as the roadmap for conduct of the development of industry in St Lucia and the resuscitation of the manufacturing sector in particular. The national industrial policy, when adopted will also offer itself as a complement to the Industrial Policy Protocol 3 at the CARICOM level and the country's commitments and its other international obligations. It is expected that the policy will allow for a role and involvement of all the social partners in participating in the thrust in attaining the overall economic objectives of the new thrust of the Ministry.
