(St Lucia, August 29, 2000) - Small and medium size hotels from St. Lucia will participate in the "HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS WORKSHOP", an environmental seminar delivered by the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism (CAST), a subsidiary of the Caribbean Hotel Association dedicated to promoting and developing sustainable tourism in the Region.

The seminar, to be administered by Judy Thomas of the Caribbean Disaster and Emergency Response Agency will be held at the Bay Gardens Hotel, on September 4th and 5th. Its objective is not only to assist participants in identifying structural vulnerabilities of facilities during a hurricane in order to minimize risks, but also to address how to deal before5 during and after the hurricane with the preparation of plans for communications, reconstruction and dealing with insurance companies.

The St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association and the St. Lucia Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with CAST, are graciously sponsoring the Hurricane Preparedness Workshop. These organizations are committed to protecting the pristine environment in which they live and operate, and realize the importance of this course within the Caribbean Region.

This two-day course is designed for business managers, engineers or risk prevention managers. Day One includes information sharing, a discussion on the Caribbean Hotel Association's Hurricane Manual, what to do before the hurricane strikes, the designing of a Communications Plan and a case study of an area that has had hurricane damage. Day Two addresses topics such as Recovery and Restoration, what to do during the hurricane, Managing Insurance Coverage and the Exercising and Preparing of an action plan.

The islands of the Caribbean continue to be ravaged by hurricanes, and damage to infrastructure, physical structures and resources is creating a growing hardship for the people of the Region. CAST offers this course in recognition of the need to assist the tourism sector throughout the Caribbean.

Participants from Hurricane Workshops held this summer in other Caribbean countries were very satisfied with the course. Damian Clarke, of the Comfort Suites, felt that the workshop "provided practical suggestions in which hotels can benefit from". Donald Wynter, Maintenance Manager for Mockingbird Hill Hotel, said that the course offered him many ideas to add to his list of tasks to fulfill.
