Carnival 2000 comes to a
close today with history having been created on the weekend when the island
crowned its first female calypso Monarch. Lady Spice, with her
performances of This Women Vex and Looking for a Man, outdid her
competitors.
Walleigh, with What Dey Singing and Lock Me Up took the second place. Mary G placed third with Give Me Back the Love and Calypso History which fulfilled its prophecy in part (the song predicted the crowning of a female monarch, namely herself). The fourth place went to another "clairvoyant" Bingo who predicted that the crowd would be shouting "Bingo!" in one of his renditions entitled Bingo. His second song, which he had performed at the Soca Monarch competition soem days before Picante went down equally well with the crowd and the judges.
The defending monarch, Bachelor, did not enjoy the success of the previous year in which as a newcomer he captured the title. This year he came out bottom of the list in 10th place.
The weekend's activities included as well, the King and Queen of the Bands competition and the first ever SocaFest on Sunday. The SocaFest, which saw performances by local and regional soca bands and artistes, immediately followed the King & Queen of the Bands competition and led into the traditional J'Ouvert street jump up till 8 a.m. Monday.
Today, Tuesday, the bands will parade once more before the judges and claim their prizes with the coveted title of Band of the Year at stake. |
