Government To Spend EC$17.3m on Education Projects |
Wednesday, May 17, 2000 – The Saint Lucia House of Assembly, on Tuesday, May 16, 2000 approved the borrowing of a loan of not more than 6.43 million US dollars from the Caribbean Development Bank to finance the second phase of the Basic Education Reform Project. The money will go towards financing the largest primary school on the island, the development of a new technical vocational institution and the expansion of the Vieux Fort Senior Primary School. Addressing the House of Assembly Tuesday, Minister for Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports Honourable Mario Michel said the new primary school will be built in the Union area and will accommodate over one thousand students. He suggested that it would improve access, quality and efficiency of primary education in St. Lucia and bring to an end the shift system that currently operates at the St. Aloysius R. C. Boys’ Primary School and the Ave Maria Girls Primary School. The new technical vocational institution will be built at Ciceron and will accommodate five hundred and twenty five students. Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Honourable Dr. Kenny Anthony said at Tuesday’s sitting of the House of Assembly, the institution would be a key plant in government’s efforts to ensure that technical vocational training in the school system is strengthened, particularly at the senior primary level. "Those young people who are unable to get into the community college will have an alternative route to secure vocational training. At long last, we are beginning to see signs of the government’s strategy beginning to bear fruit … We are moving on to that implementation stage and this technical vocational institution is a key element of our education strategy," Dr. Anthony ended. The expansion work to be undertaken at the Vieux Fort Senior Primary School will allow the school to accommodate an additional one hundred and seventy five students. |
