Government Assures Reliable Supply of Cement |
Thursday, September 14, 2000 – Officials of the Ministry of Commerce have moved to assure contractors of a steady supply of cement and other building materials during the current boom in construction around the country. Minister of Commerce, Industry and Consumer Affairs, Philip J. Pierre explained today that fears by some builders of a possible shortage of cement, in particular, were conveyed by the ministry to local suppliers, Renwick and Company Limited. He said an assurance was given that routine stocks would be bolstered to ensure reliability of supply and no disruption in building activity. Industry analysts have suggested that current demand for building materials is reaching unprecedented levels with several public and private sector projects underway and greater activity anticipated by development planners. Observers had expressed the fear of some projects not being completed on schedule because of a shortage of raw materials, but suppliers maintain that imports would be tailored to meet demand and distribution systems have been enhanced to expedite delivery island-wide. Just recently, Minister of Planning, Dr. Walter Francois observed that there had been a dramatic rise in the number of cement retailers in St. Lucia. He acknowledged then that while this might have resulted in reduced sales for some large traditional retailers, it was very convenient for homeowners and contractors working in rural communities, as cement and other building materials were now being retailed in almost every village. |
