Tuesday, May 23, 2000 - Officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade say three years of lobbying and intense negotiations will come to an end on Friday May 25, 2000 when Chinese officials sign and hand over ownership certificates to the Goods Distribution Free Trade Zone established in the south. Foreign Service Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Tafawa Williams says, "This Free Trade Zone will serve as a boost for the St. Lucian economy in terms of the production of goods and the creation of employment as was evident in the construction of the free zone. More importantly it has fostered collaboration between the Chinese and the St. Lucian people, and has provided the skills necessary to do it and the impetus for creation of an impressive work ethic as well. It is a concretisation of the Ministry’s goals for development on the island." China’s Vice Minister for Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation His Excellency Sun Guangxiang is expected to be on hand for Friday’s official opening of the Free Zone, scheduled for 3 pm. The ceremony will also see the signing of two other agreements between the Chinese and St. Lucia governments. The first deals with economic and technical cooperation for the sum of 20 million RMB for supplemental funds for the construction of the National Stadium. The second agreement involves 2 million RMB, geared towards the development of small projects on the island. The multi million-dollar Free Trade Zone comprises eleven, factory styled, warehouse buildings and one administrative center. |
