Word from the Ministry of Health, Human Services, Family Affairs and Gender
Relations is that dialogue has gotten underway with French authorities for
assistance in developing a National Service for St. Lucia. Health
Minister Hon Sarah-Flood Beaubrun says preparations are underway here to receive
a high-ranking French delegation from neighboring Martinique next month, for
talks on establishing the national ambulance. According
to Mrs. Beaubrun “What we would like to see is a National Ambulance Service,
so that in the first instance we will have all of the required ambulances that
we need in order to run that service throughout the country, and we also would
need to have the personnel to staff the ambulances. We
also need to have the proper coordination between the Fire Service and all of
the various points from which the ambulances operate. That is what we have
approached the French Government for, although they have not yet committed
themselves but as a first step, from May 17th – 19th the
head of the Ambulance Services in Martinique together with his deputy will be
visiting St. Lucia to meet with our staff here so as to begin conducting a
feasibility study to determine exactly what St. Lucia’s needs are with respect
to having a proper and efficient functioning ambulance service.” That
process will then be taken forward based on the recommendations from the French
personnel. A Health Ministry spokesman says already significant changes have been implemented with a view to enhancing St. Lucia’s ambulance service. These include an island-wide radio network together with trained and qualified emergency medical technicians. |
