French Ambassador Presents Credentials |
Wednesday, February 09, 2000 – Ambassador of the Republic of France to St. Lucia, His Excellency Henri Vidal, presented his credentials to St. Lucia’s Governor General, Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy, at Government House on Tuesday, February 08, 2000. During the presentation ceremony, Ambassador Vidal emphasized the importance of the close historical association between France and the Caribbean islands, making special reference to the good neighbourly contacts between St. Lucia and Martinique. The Ambassador spoke of a number of projects being implemented here through French Cooperation in health, infrastructure, rural development and town planning. He said France is pleased with the special focus given to linguistic and cultural cooperation, particularly the teaching of the French language in the educational system. He believes that the use of the kweyol language together with French is an essential tool for strengthening French/St. Lucia bilateral cooperation. The French Ambassador noted that as a result of a meeting between Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Kenny D. Anthony and French government officials, measures are now being worked out in France to soften visa regulations between St. Lucia and the neighbouring French islands. In her reply, Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy said St. Lucia is particularly grateful to the government of the Republic of France for its steadfast and unwavering support for St. Lucia and the rest of the region on the issue of the banana trade regime during the renegotiation of the Lome Agreement. |
