Four-Day Teacher Tourism Workshop Opens |
Monday, February 14, 2000 – Social Studies teachers from secondary schools island-wide will be given the opportunity to attend a four-day tourism education workshop organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and International Financial Services in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports and the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO). The workshop takes place at the Palm Tree Hotel in the north and begins on Tuesday, February 15, 2000. It will examine areas like regional tourism trends, developing and marketing of tourism products, tourism impacts and human resource needs of the tourism industry. Education Officer in the Ministry of Tourism, Sharmon Jules, says the rationale behind the workshop is "To add to the body of knowledge that teachers have on tourism, so as to enable them to give quality instruction to the their students. It will help teachers understand and appreciate more fully, issues affecting tourism at the national, regional and international levels and to share their experiences regarding the challenges of teaching, while exploring ways of addressing these challenges." With St. Lucia becoming increasingly dependent on tourism, industry officials say education within the sector has become even more necessary, in order to provide the caliber of persons that would encourage the industry to flourish. Resource persons will come from the Ministry of Tourism and the Caribbean Tourism Organization. |
