Fond d'Or Hosts Folk Festival |
Thursday, December 07, 2000 - The people of Mabouya Valley and Dennery will be showcasing their talents in a variety of cultural activities as the Mabouya Valley Development Project puts on the Fond d’Or Folk Festival on December 13, 2000. The aim of the activity is to publicize the attractions of the Fond d’Or Heritage Tourism Site that opened in February this year. Member of the Fond d’Or Heritage Tourism Site Committee, Ignatius Jean, says that apart from the promotional aspect of the festival, there was also a developmental role that the festival could play in the lives of people since it would provide "…an opportunity for them in the future to perhaps be gainfully employed from that sort of activity". There will be dramatic performances by schools in the respective communities as well as by cultural groups like Montego Bay from Oleon in addition to the traditional La Marguerite and La Rose groups. Fond d’Or is the site of an old sugar mill estate and therefore it offers visitors a glimpse of the past economic activity of the island. There is an interpretation center and the picturesque surroundings of the site make it ideal for family picnics and other recreational activities. The organizers of the Fond d’Or Folk Festival hope to make it an annual event.
