Focus on Families for International Families Day |
Contact: Dana Augustin Thursday, May 11, 2000 – International Day of Families will be observed on May 15, under the theme, "Families – Agents and Beneficiaries of Development and Social Progress." The theme coincides with the fact that this year will mark the Fourth United Nations Development Decade (1991 – 2000). It also features appropriately as part of the General Assembly’s review of the outcome of the World Summit for Social Development. Designating a special day for families worldwide began some seven years ago by the United Nations, as the need to strengthen awareness of issues affecting families within their immediate and wider social and economic environment, was gaining greater importance. The United Nations is placing great emphasis on eradicating poverty - a problem that continues to cause many social ills and hinders the ability of families to support each other. It is also looking at a number of other key factors such as demographic patterns, family policies and legislation, which will determine how each country contributes to the development process of building greater family linkages. In Saint Lucia, the Ministry of Health, Human Services, Family affairs and Gender Relations, has organized a package of events to celebrate the occasion, throughout the month of May. Discussions, debates and other informal and social activities will be taking place in various churches and schools around the island. The local theme for this year’s International Day of Families is, "The Foundation for Development and Social Progress in the Saint Lucian Society." |
