Financial Services Sector Makes Its First Contribution to the Consolidated Fund |
Castries, January 21, 2000 - Prime Minister, Honourable Dr. Kenny Anthony, received the first tangible proceeds from the island’s venture into the International Financial Services sector on Friday, January 21, 2000. A two hundred and fifty thousand U.S. dollar (US$250,000.00) cheque was presented to Dr. Anthony by Chairman of the Financial Centre Corporation, Robin Kelton. The cheque is an advance payment by the Financial Centre Corporation (FCC), provided for in the agreement between the government and the corporation. Through the agreement, the FCC will manage the financial services registry on behalf of the government and will be responsible for the promotion of the sector. The Prime Minister saw the cheque as symbolic in many ways. He said it is the first expression of the potential benefits from the industry and symbolizes the fact that the island had begun the process of diversifying its economy into new directions. Said Prime Minister Anthony, "I am expecting great things from the sector… I have said before that we are late comers to this industry and whether we do well will depend very, very significantly not only on your own ability to market the product, but very crucially, that we do so in an environment in which we protect our own integrity." The Prime Minister noted too, that the association that has been established between the FCC and the Government of Saint Lucia, is one that will redound to the economic benefit of the island. He hoped that it would inspire confidence in the future of the sector and the island’s economy. The FCC expects to sign its first company within two weeks. |
