In response to the heavy rains of February 21, 2000 and the resulting damage to the island's infrastructure, the Ministry of Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities has been working around the clock since Monday night and has made the following assessments of the damage to date, as at 11 a.m. on February 22, 2000.

bulletNo significant damage has been reported for the north of the island.  At Riviere Mitant a causeway was blocked but will be cleared before end of day.  At Assou Canal and Vieux Sikwi the roads suffered further damage but these were due to be repaired in this quarter anyway.
bulletIn DENNERY, a culvert at Praslin has collapsed totally and the road is motorable for light vehicles only including mini buses and 15 - 30 seaters.  The Thomazo Bridge inlet was blocked by debris but that is being cleared.
bullet

In MICOUD, there were landslides along the Mahaut road causing extensive damage to sections of the road.  These sections are not motorable to cars and will be attended to during the week.

bulletIn VIEUX FORT,  siltation of the La Ressource River caused flooding of the Vieux Fort/Laborie highway.  The road is currently being desilted but traffic can now flow freely since the waters have abated.
bulletAt SALTIBUS a major slide has occurred but is currently being cleared.
bulletThe approach to causeway/bridge at Riviere Doree has been washed away and the Ministry of Works is carrying out the necessary repairs.  The bridge is impassable now but it is expected to be restored later this evening.
bulletMajor slides at Victoria and Morne Jacques have completely blocked the roads there.  No vehicular traffic is possible.  Work on clearing the area has started and is expected to be completed by Wednesday.  The area is cut off from any approach via Soufriere.  It is not possible therefore, to travel from Soufriere to Vieux Fort by road.
bulletAt MYERS BRIDGE trees have fallen across bridge and these are now being cleared.
bulletBetween SOUFRIERE and CANARIES there are 4 slides along the road.  The largest was at Quartre Chimen, completely cutting off vehicular traffic to Soufriere from Canaries.  However, that slide was cleared at about 11 a.m. today and the road is now open.
bulletAt MILLET and Anse La Raye  the Village Council has teamed up with personnel from the Ministry of Works to cleanup debris from the flooding.
bullet

At ODSAN/LA CROIX MAINGOT approximately  200 cubic yards of landslide was cleared.  So too at VENUS.

bullet

The bridge linking VANARD and SARROT is completely destroyed and it will be some time before that link can be restored.
