Contact: Ministry Health, Human Services, Family Affairs and Gender Relations

Tuesday, January 18, 2000 - The Government of St. Lucia is moving one step ahead towards the formulation of a national policy and programme to address the needs of older persons in St. Lucia.

Towards this end the Ministry of Health, Human Services, Family Affairs and Gender Relations will host a national consultation on the needs of 254 older persons in St. Lucia. The one-day consultation scheduled for January 25, 2000 at the Caribees Hotel, is designed to present the findings of a recent study on the needs of and caring for older persons in St. Lucia.

The study financed by the European Union / Stabex Funds was conducted by the consulting firm Help Age International. The study sought to conduct a needs assessment of older persons, review the current programmes and support services offered at various institutions on the island and to make recommendations for improving and enhancing the quality of life of the persons in St. Lucia.

The group from Help Age International commenced their studies on the island in November 1999 and is expected to present their final report within the next two months. The national consultation will bring together some sixty persons from various agencies. Prime Minister, Honorable Dr. Kenny D. Anthony will deliver an address at the opening.
