Consultation on Draft Consumer Protection Bill Underway |
Thursday, May 25, 2000 – Today, stakeholders together with members of the public are receiving an opportunity to have their suggestions and concerns factored into efforts at formulating a Consumer Protection Bill, pioneered by the Ministry of Commerce, International Financial Services and Consumer Affairs. Redress Officer in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs Andrew Quashie says, "It is hoped that at that consultation there would be a wide spectrum of interested parties, individuals as consumers, as well as supplies and producers of goods and services, small businesses as well as large ones. We will all come together and lay the concerns on the table as far as the contents of the draft is concerned. It is hoped, that persons will avail themselves of this opportunity to state what it is they would like to see reflected in a bill when it is eventually approved." The Draft Consumer Protection Bill comprises eight sections dealing with issues like protection through product safety, unfair trade practices, product liability, and false advertising among others. The Ministry of Commerce, International Financial Services and Consumer Affairs is hoping to that the bill will be brought to Cabinet and subsequently tabled in the House of Assembly and passed into law, by September of this year. The one-day national consultation is taking place at the Francis Compton Building on the Waterfront in Castries. |
