Carnival 2000 Judged a Success |
Contact: Dana Augustin Monday, September 04, 2000 – Organizers of Carnival 2000 have said that the festival was a success, judging from the level of sponsorship and promotion that it received. That indication was given during the awards ceremony of the National Carnival Development Committee (NCDC) staged at the Green Parrot restaurant last Saturday. According to Acting Minister for Culture, Honourable Jon Odlum, while Saint Lucians can realize monetary as well as cultural success, there is much to be desired in this local leg of the art form. "We must not forget that we have just started with our Carnival initiative. Our Carnival will improve as we go on," said Odlum. Director of Culture Michael Aubertin underscored the need for the incorporation of more local talent into the festival. This he said is crucial for the provision of a unique product to the international arena while at the same time preserving Saint Lucian culture. Meanwhile, the NCDC has begun preparations for next year’s event taking into consideration the shortcomings of this year’s Carnival. NCDC Director, Gandolph St. Clair, noted one main problem, was that of the main venue, the Marchand Grounds. However, the committee is pressing for repair work on the grounds in the hope of better facilitating the revelers and other participants, as well as reducing the cost of preparing the grounds for the event. Saturday’s ceremony also saw the handing over of awards to the sponsors of Carnival 2000 including gold sponsor BWIA, and main sponsor Windward and Leeward Brewery. Prizes were given to the contestants of the Golden Jubilee Carnival Queen Contest, and the Carnival Bands, for various categories. |
