Cariman Limited Provides Assistance to Lennie Victims |
Thursday, May 25, 2000 – Added assistance has come for residents of Soufriere affected by the ravages of last year’s freak storm – Hurricane Lennie. On Wednesday May 24, 2000 Cariman Limited of Vieux Fort handed over a package of supplies consisting of kitchen utensils, chairs and collapsible tables, to parliamentary representative for Soufriere Honourable Dr. Walter Francois. Owners of Cariman Limited, say the package of supplies was made possible with assistance from workers, who contributed close to three thousand dollars. Honourable Dr. Walter Francois says the supplies will greatly assist the twenty families who lost their homes as a result of Hurricane Lennie. Cariman Limited will also provide an additional seven thousand dollars toward the relief effort, and the National Emergency Management Office says it is still in need of support. "We have an average of eight families in the shelter in Soufriere. We’ve made contributions to twenty families but my office is still looking to assist a little over one hundred families who were affected. They are staying with friends and relatives at the moment that is why they are not in the shelter. We still have other people to deal with so I’m making an appeal, if there are other people out there who wish to contribute, our doors are still open to accept contributions," says Dawn French, Acting Director of the Emergency Management Office. The company’s success story according to Dr. Francois highlights the fact that given correct wages and proper working conditions, St. Lucia workers can produce and be examples to the region and the world. The company produces electronic parts that are shipped to the United States for assembly in other electronic products. |
