CARIFESTA Honors St. Lucia's Lady of Folk |
Contact: Julita Peter Tuesday, August 29, 2000 - St. Lucia’s Lady of Folk Marie "Sesene" Descartes was among eight renowned Caribbean Artistes honored at the just concluded Caribbean Festival of Arts in St. Kitts /Nevis. "Sesene" is popularly known as one of the foremost exponents of the art of the chantwel in St. Lucia. Director of Culture Michael Aubertine says, "Apart from her singing she has this joie de vivre, which is so charismatic that from the time she was first exposed to CARIFESTA she really brought home the freshness of St. Lucian folk singing. I think she has made us very, very proud as St. Lucians, to be honored. She has received many honors over the years but this one to me, chosen among such an elite group all over the Caribbean deserves our applause to Sesene." At each staging CARIFESTA recognizes a select few on the impact of their contribution to the arts and culture of the Caribbean and beyond. The host country determines the number of awards it will bestow and from the vast pool of possibilities, considers a number of persons short-listed by the Cultural Committee makes a selection and adds names of any other person it sees fit. "Sesene" Descartes joins honorees like Karl Broodhagen –Sculptor from Barbados, Peter Minshall – Costume Designer from Trinidad and Tobago, Erwin DeVries- Artist from Suriname, Louise Bennet-Poet/Actress from Jamaica, Olive Lewin-Musician from Jamaica, Len " Boogie" Sharpe –Pannist from Trinidad and Tobago and Simon Jones-Hendrickson Writer from St. Kitts and Nevis. |
