Basic Education Reform Project to Analyse the Education System |
Castries, January 24, 2000 - The Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports is undertaking a series of studies to analyse various aspects of the education system, with a view to making proposals and recommendations for improvement. A total of four studies will be carried out under a Basic Education Reform Project. One study will compare the performances of boys and girls at the CXC O’ Level Examinations from 1995 to 1999. Another will analyse students’ performance at the Common Entrance Examinations from 1997 to 1999, to determine whether there is any correlation to student/teacher ratios. The Ministry of Education will also review the efficiency of computer laboratories that have been financed under the Basic Education Reform Project. That study will help the ministry decide whether the computer laboratory project should be extended to other schools. The fourth study will examine the ministry’s ability to successfully prepare young people for the local job market and for meeting the social and economic demands of the country. The studies will begin this month and will be carried out over a three-month period. Representatives of the Teachers’ Union, the National Principals’ Association, Parent/Teacher Associations and Ministry officials are expected to play an active part in the exercise. |
