Monday, September 25, 2000 – The Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Education and the Saint Lucia Tourist Board have all come together with tour operator Cox and Company Limited, to arrange an educational tour of Saint Lucia, for the winners of a "Back To School" competition of a popular store ‘Cave Shepherd’ in Barbados. The first group of twenty students accompanied by two adults arrived in Saint Lucia on Saturday, September 23, at George F.L. Charles Airport.

Eleanor Rae who is the Manager of Tourism at Cox & Company Limited said that the idea was embraced not only to promote Saint Lucia’s tourist product but specifically to encourage the younger generation to get involved in the tourism industry. "It’s just really one day of information. In a sense that’s why we have involved the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Education and the Saint Lucia Tourist Board. It is one way for the students to sort of have an understanding of the Tourism product in Saint Lucia as well as…. an educational experience for them," said Rae.

Meanwhile Advertising Manager at ‘Cave Shepherd’ in Barbados, Hugh Durant expressed his company’s delight at having Saint Lucia as the prize destination. He said that not only is the tour beneficial to the students in terms of education, but it is an ideal opportunity to make economic linkages in the tourist sectors of both Barbados and Saint Lucia especially given that Cave Shepherd has a branch of its own at Pointe Seraphine, Saint Lucia.

Saturday’s group was the first to arrive while two others, each consisting of twenty students and accompanied by two adults are expected to arrive here shortly. One group is scheduled for next Saturday while the other arrives in Saint Lucia on October 7. This programme for the students is the second of its kind as the first was held some five years ago. Officials are hopeful that with private sector support, Saint Lucian students can also participate in such a programme in the near future.
