RoseauThe legacy of neglect and abandonment plaguing the impoverished communities of  Anse-La Raye and Canaries is moving steadily towards its end. So says Parliamentary Representative for the area the Honourable Cyprian Lansiquot.

Mr. Lansiquot, speaking after a two-day tour of his constituency by Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Kenny Anthony, other government ministers and technocrats on Sunday and Monday says, firm commitments have been given by Dr. Anthony and other Government officials like Communications and Works Minister Senator the Honourable Calixte George to address the many pressing concerns of residents.

"The constituency of Anse La Raye and Canaries is an impoverished one. It is one that has been neglected for some time. I want to say that this trend has been reversed and that the legacy of neglect has now come to an end. The reason why I say this is that the Prime Minister is currently visiting all of the seventeen constituencies and the Anse-La-Raye/Canaries constituency is the fifth constituency he is visiting. That is to show that Anse-La-Raye/Canaries is no longer last.  Before they would be last in everything," said the MP.

The main problems, he noted, included chronic shortage of water, electricity and poor road conditions. Both communities, the parliamentary representative says, are also plagued by the problem of unplanned development that has given way to slumps and ghettos.

Mr. Lansiquot says a number of tourism initiatives have also been outlined for the two communities in hopes of reducing unemployment.

Prime Minister Anthony has been touring the various constituencies on the island with a view to meeting people away from the formal trappings of his office to hear their concerns and determine the needs of the various communities.
