Over twenty young women from the village of Anse-La-Raye are well on their way
to becoming budding entrepreneurs, after five-weeks of intensive training in
agro-processing. The trainees were given the opportunity to make a variety of
jams and marmalades using local fruits through a project facilitated by the
Ministry of Community Development and the Inter-American Institute for
Co-operation in Agriculture (IICA). IICA’s
representative for the Eastern Caribbean States Dr. Barbara Graham reminded
participants that their products must always be of top quality if they are to
successfully compete with the agro-processing giants on the market. “I
see a group of people who have been trained and who are going to get involved in
income generating activities to improve conditions in rural areas as they
improve their own standards of living. We are hoping to remain involved to
ensure and to promote and enhance the sustainability of the achievements of the
women of Anse-La Raye, Millet and Belaire,” she said. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Community Development, Jacinta St. Helen, has expressed her ministry’s continued support towards the sustainability of the project. She says the ministry’s mission is to empower persons, and to give them the resources towards the spiritual, cultural, economic and social enhancement of themselves, their communities and the nation as a whole. |
